The paradigm shift of wastewater treatment from costly pollutant removal to resource recovery is retarded by slow development of cost-effective nutrient recovery technologies. This proposed project aims to 1) accelerate the translation of a recent invention of struvite recovery for organic production (STROP) technology, and 2) extend the chemical-free phosphate recovery strategy from sludge digestate at Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) to dairy manure and manure digestate at Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). Unlike the existing technologies that recover struvite with addition of chemicals, STROP integrates air stripping to increase pH and remove struvite-competing ions, mineral-based formation and crystallization of struvite, and biobased granulation of struvite crystals. STROP saves WRRFs 38% of operational costs compared to the existing struvite recovery technologies that add synthetic chemicals to form struvite and grow crystal size over days inside crystallizers. Moreover, the chemical-free STROP technology eliminates a barrier to certify the recovered struvite as natural fertilizers for organic farming. It is proposed to verify the value propositions of the STROP technology with real high-phosphate sludge digestate and explore methods to increase efficiency of phosphate recovery as diverse natural phosphorus fertilizers and livestock feed ingredients from dairy manure and manure digestate. The outputs and outcomes will make OrganoTech LLC better prepared to register the recovered products as commercial fertilizers and seek acceptance of the recovered products into Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) generic input materials.
