With proposed cuts to research programs at the EPA and USGS looming, it has become more imperative than ever to communicate with the public about the critical and cutting-edge research that is conducted by federal agencies, especially on pollutants. In 2024, the EPA awarded $15 million dollars in research funds to reduce per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure from food and to protect farmlands. The projects range in focus from understanding PFAS bioaccumulation in agricultural plants and animals to methods for decreasing PFAS exposure to humans from the food supply. Here, I propose to generate 5 episodes of a podcast, in collaboration with ESF’s Digital Storytelling Studio, to highlight projects that received this EPA funding. I will also work with an undergraduate student to disseminate the podcast, as well as to develop educational materials for high school classroom use, in collaboration with a New York State high school educator.
