Freshwater ecosystems across New York State face increasing pressures from harmful algal blooms (HABs), nutrient loading, and climate-driven environmental change, creating a growing need for timely and scalable water quality monitoring solutions. This project will implement a remote sensing–enabled web portal that integrates satellite observations, machine learning, historical NYSDEC CSLAP datasets, and stakeholder-supported field measurements to provide spatially continuous water quality information for the Finger Lakes and beyond. Building on validated research developed by the Salehi GeoLab at SUNY ESF, the platform will deliver operational products including chlorophyll-a, turbidity, water clarity, and HAB-related indicators. The portal will provide lake-wide water quality maps and historical trend analyses dating back to 2015 at monthly or finer temporal intervals, depending on the availability of cloud-free Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery. Designed to complement and enhance existing NYSDEC monitoring programs, the platform directly supports priorities identified in New York State’s HAB Roadmap through improved monitoring, assessment, and environmental intelligence capabilities. In collaboration with regional lake associations and ZaminSense Inc., the project will transition proven research workflows into an operational and scalable decision-support platform with strong potential for statewide implementation and commercialization.
