Algal blooms have occurred with increasing frequency in the Finger Lakes in the last decade. While exact cause of the increased blooms remains uncertain, the most direct means to reduce bloom occurrence is to reduce nutrient levels entering waterbodies. A small amount of nutrient loading to waterbodies in the Finger Lakes region has been attributed to septic systems and wastewater treatment plants, but the majority of loading is considered to be due to agricultural land use. Additional land management practices have the potential to reduce nutrient loading (e.g. Canandaigua Lake 9E Plan, 2023). The objective of this project is to gather tributary monitoring data for both streamflow and nutrient concentrations across multiple subwatersheds and over a period of several years. This will allow for the comparison of how differences in watershed characteristics may lead to differences in nutrient concentrations.
