Northern New York is the stronghold for the state’s Common Loon, an apex predator and a vital indicator of aquatic health. However, loon productivity has dropped below the 0.48 stable population threshold, driven by factors such as boat strikes, nest washouts, and acute lead poisoning. Since 1998, ESF, we have monitored loon exposure to pollution and reproductive risks. We seek support for two interns to accomplish three objectives: 1) quantify the impacts of recreational boat disturbance on nesting loons to inform future management (interns will monitor loon reproductive success and boat impacts in summer 2027); 2) strengthen and modernize community outreach via a Lead-Free Tackle Box Ambassador program and distributing 300 tackle kits to youth anglers along with youth/public programs in watershed health; 3) expand community stewardship and certify 25% more Loon Friendly Lake Certification Program (LFLCP) participant groups. Benefits include direct reduction in loon morbidity/mortality and increased reproductive success and embedding sustainable waterbody practices at the local level. This will prevent future heavy metal contamination in NY waters and instill a message that individual choices matter. By preventing lead contamination and managing lake use, we reduce the long-term environmental management costs for NY state agencies and municipalities.
