Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants that pose significant challenges for groundwater remediation, drinking water protection, and environmental management. Current treatment approaches frequently focus on PFAS capture and concentration rather than destruction, resulting in ongoing management costs and the need for secondary treatment or disposal.

InSRT (In Situ Remediation Technology) is a patented ultrasonic treatment technology developed at Clarkson University (U.S. Patent 10,934,827 issued to Clarkson University and licensed to RemWell) that is designed to permanently destroy PFAS in contaminated groundwater. The technology has progressed through laboratory-scale development and field-scale demonstration supported by federal funding programs, including the U.S. Department of Defense. These efforts have demonstrated the potential of the technology while identifying important operational and site-specific factors that require additional validation before full-scale commercialization. A recent opportunity has emerged to conduct a field demonstration at a contaminated site in Sweden that offers more favorable and controlled operating conditions than our previous demonstration site. This demonstration will provide the critical performance data needed to support commercialization, customer adoption, and deployment of the technology.

The proposed project will support fabrication of a commercial-ready treatment unit, execution of the Sweden field demonstration, and collection of the performance data necessary to transition the technology from advanced prototype status to commercial deployment readiness.
