Tire wear particles (TWPs) and their toxic transformation product, 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-q), threaten New York State’s water resources and aquatic ecosystems, including sensitive species such as Brook Trout. Runoff from roadways transports these contaminants into streams and lakes, creating ecological risks and potential economic impacts on recreational fisheries and water management. Roadside soils and vegetation may serve as effective biofilters that capture and immobilize TWP-derived pollutants, but municipalities and environmental engineers currently lack field-validated guidance for designing and implementing such systems. This project will develop practical, deployable nature-based solutions to intercept TWP runoff before it reaches aquatic environments.
